Rights of Relatives in Islam - Importance of Relatives

Importance of  Rights of the Relatives

Islam gives the great importance to the rights of the relatives. Relatives are the family to whom the person belongs. Beside our parents, children, husband, wife we are bound strictly with other relatives which are close to our parents, husband, and wife. Allah Almighty has designed the system of birth in this way that we all are bound in the relations.

Islam has very strict laws in relation to the interaction with relatives. It is regarded as an act of corruption if a person cuts off his contacts with any of his relations. It has been made compulsory to help the needy relations at the time of their requirements and a person should always stay kind to his relatives.

A Muslim needs to fear Allah in his dealings with the relatives. He will be accountable on the Day of Judgment in front of Allah almighty in relation to the treatment which he had maintained with his closed ones.

Allah Says in Holy Qur'an

Aayah 90 of Surah Nahl says: Allah enjoins justice, generosity and kind treatment with relatives

Holy Quran in Aayah 27 of Surah Baqarah says:

But it is only the rebels He (Allah) makes go astray: who break their covenant with Allah after it has been confirmed, who severs/breaks the bonds [of relationship] that Allah has commanded to be joined, who spread corruption on earth these are the losers.

Aayah 1 of Surah Nisa highlights the relationship in these words:

O Mankind, fear your Lord, Who created you of a single soul, and of the same created his mate, and from that pair spread countless men and women over the earth; fear that Allah in Whose name you demand your rights from one another, and abstain from violating relations between kinsfolk; note it well that Allah is watching you very closely.

"Certainly Allah orders equity, kindness (to people) and the giving (of what they need) to the relatives."(Surah Nahl 16:90)

In Surah Raad is the following verse:

"And those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined and have awe of their Lord and fear the evil reckoning."(Surah Raad 13:21)

"Those who join together (do Sileh Rahmi) those things which Allah has commanded to be joined."(Surah Raad 13:21)

"You shall not find people who believe in Allah and the latter day befriending those who act in opposition to Allah and His apostle, even though they were their (own) fathers, or their sons or their brothers or their kinsfolk..."
(Surah Mujadila 58:22)

"Certainly the Believers Are Brothers of Each Other."(Surah Hujarat 49:10)

Wealth And Offspring Are Allurements Of Life: But Good Deeds Are Best In The Sight Of Your Lord, As Rewards And As The Foundation Of Hope.(Surah  18:  Ayah  46)

Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said

Whoever is pleased that he be granted more wealth, and that his lease of life be prolonged, then he should keep good relations with his kith and kin.

(Hadith No. 5985, Book of Al-Adab, Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 8).

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr (RA): The Prophet (PBUH) said, Al-Waasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Waasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.

(Hadith No. 5991, Book of Al-Adab, Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 8).

Al-Waasil means one who keeps good ties with his blood relatives.

Narrated Jubair bin Mutim that he heard the Prophet (PBUH) saying, Al-Qati (the person who severs the bond of kinship) will not enter Paradise.(Hadith No. 5984, Book of Al-Adab, Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 8).

Yahya related from Malik from Salama ibn Safwan ibn Salama az-Zuraqi that Zayd ibn Talha ibn Rukana, who attributed it to the Prophet (saws) said, "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Every deen has an innate character. The character of Islam is modesty.' "

Allah's Messenger (saws) said, "Do you know the things which most commonly brings people into Paradise? It is fear of Allah and good character. Do you know what most commonly brings people into Hell? It is the two hollow things: the mouth and the private parts."
